In this post you’ll find some great tips for painting your garage door. While it’s always advisable to use a professional for your external painting, this article will give you some tips if you decide to do the project.
Tip # 1
Use a good quality primer to make sure the paint sticks. Your garage door takes some abuse, so you want to make sure you have a good tough coat.
Tip #2
For best results when doing external painting, wait until the sun isn’t shining directly on the door. Additionally, it’s best to wait until the temperature is between 50-90º Fahrenheit.
Tip #3
Use a high quality nylon brush and begin with the recessed areas. Begin at a corner and paint until complete.
Tip #4
Paint the rest of the panel until the entire panel is complete. Repeat the process for each panel. If extra paint has overlapped the stiles, wipe it away.
Tip #5
Paint the perimeter of the garage door in a 2”–3” wide section. It’s best to start at the top corner and be sure to reload the brush when necessary too maintain a wet edge.
Tip #6
You can paint the rest of the door with a roller.
Now that we’ve talked a bit about the standard way to paint a garage door, take a look at some examples of what some very creative people have done.
